About Ford Falcon

The Ford Falcon was developed in Australia in the 60s as a rival to the popular Holden. Initially derived from an American Ford Falcon, it was successively refined for Australian conditions before a full independent Falcon was developed in here with the demise of the Falcon model in the US.

The Falcon was designed as a large family car and many performance, luxury and utility models were developed over the years. By the release of the sixth generation in 1998, Falcon had many well established and loved models including Forté (previously GLi), S, Futura, Fairmont, Fairmont Ghia, XR6, XR6 VCT and XR8. The first series of the AU Falcon was plagued with issues, but these were addressed in later Series II and II releases.

The BA Falcon was a major update of the AU and resulting in the car winning Wheels Car Of The Year in 2002. The models were XT (formerly Forté), Futura, Fairmont, Fairmont Ghia, XR6 and XR8. Apart from considerable styling changes the car received a host of engineering and electronics upgrades. The subsequent BF released in 2005 was mostly improvements in the powertrain.

The seventh and last generation FG saw the discontinuation of the Fairmont Gia and Futura models. The ford V8 was phased out and FPV replaced it with a 5.0L Coyote V8 in 2010 at the same time releasing a Series II FG with minor interior and exterior styling changes. In 2014 Ford released the FG X model, the last of the Falcon series, and ceased manufacturing in Australia in 2016.
