The Ford Transit van has been around since the 60s. The first generation Transit van platform therefore lasted for more than 20 years before being replaced by the new VE6 platform in 1986. The MK1 had a styling update in 1977 called the MKII or MK2. The Mk 2 was available in 6 body styles including Van, Kombi, Chassis Cab, Parcel Van, Bus and Crewbus all available in SWB or LWB versions - all up over 32 combinations with the 7 engine options. A 4.1L inline 6 was available in Australia from the late 70s.

The second generation lasted from 1986 until 2000 with various facelifts. The third generation is typically separated into the Pre-facelift models and facelift models from 2006. The third generation came with 2.0L petrol or 2.2, 2.3, 2.4 Duratorq diesel. The Facelift models featured revised exterior and introduced a 2.2L diesel as standard and an option for a 3.2L diesel inline 5-cylinder engine.

The fourth generation Ford Transit was co-designed by Ford US and Europe. With the Transit moving to Ford commercial vehicle range and only a rear-wheel drive format, the front-wheel drive version was spun-off into a smaller Ford Transit Custom. In 2020 the Transit underwent a facelift and the 2.0 and 2,4L Duratorq diesel engines were replaced with a 2.0L EcoBlue turbo diesel engine.

The Ford Transit Custom was launched in 2012 as a competitor for similar small vans. It came in SWB and LWB with two roofline heights. A 2008 update revised the grille and dashboard.
