About Holden Caprice / Holden Statesman
Statesman and the Caprice began as separate Holden models. The Statesman marquee has been around as a luxury long-wheelbase model since the early 70s based on the HQ, with WB Statesman the most different. Though they were developed for the Australian market, the grille was similar to the Chevrolet Caprice of the same era. The car was discontinued in the Mid-80s.
In 1990 the nameplate was resurrected with both the Statesman and Caprice names used to designate different luxury packages. The 5L V8 was standard issue, with a 3.6L V6 optional on the Statesman only. Various styling changes followed in the following years with designations and styling mirroring those of the commodore at the time, though it retained its distinctively different front grille and rear clip.
The second generation WH series saw the Statesman and Caprice receive their own variant series again. Luxury and improvements on engine and mechanics and the WK and WL series followed with continued improvement in ride and luxury equipment. The Statesman and Caprice were exported to a number of different countries as a luxury sedan.
The third generation WM and WN series, based on the Holden developed Zeta platform and shared little body work with the Holden Commodore. This model was exported under various badged names. By 2010 however, the Statesman name was retired and the V6 Caprice filled this gap in the model range. The WN Caprice had options for 6.0L L77 V8 engine, and the Series II came with 6.2L LS3 V8 engine.
