About Toyota Prius
The Toyota Prius was the world's first mass-produced petrol-electric hybrid car. The first generation of the XW10 was introduced in Japan in 1997. The later second iteration of the first generation, released in 2000 was the first model sold outside Japan, however.
The second generation XW20 released in 2003 was a complete redesign, becoming a larger hatchback with more interior space and is more aerodynamic. The third generation XW30 built on the more ecologically designed previous version, with better aerodynamics and the use of plant-based bioplastics used in interior components.
The fourth generation XW50 went on sale in 2016 based on Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) resulting in a lower centre of gravity and more rigid body construction. It received a facelift in 2019 with redesigned headlight and taillights.
The new fifth generation XW60 will not be sold in Australia due to low sales and is replaced by a hybrid Corolla in Toyota's range.
