About Toyota 86

The Toyota 86 was a new model line designed as a light-weight, precise handling rear-wheel drive sports car. To keep weight low, the 86 has an aluminium hood and a small boot rather than being a hatchback. The Toyota 86 is mechanically identical to the Subaru BRZ with the BRZ having a different interior and slightly different body garnish.

The car features a flat-4-cylinder 2L boxer engine from Subaru. The engine is mounted low in the chassis to keep the centre of gravity low. The transmission options are a 6-speed manual transmission or the same in an automatic transmission. With a rear-wheel drive layout, the weight distribution is not far off 50-50. This adds up to a well-balanced, precise handling vehicle.

In July 2014, an updated version of the Australian Toyota 86 range was launched. Upgrades include revised suspension, "shark-fin" roof antenna, GTS instrument cluster on GT, carbon-fibre look dash insert and reverse-view camera on GTS. In 2015 Toyota launched 450 "Blackline" based on the standard GTS model but including black racing decals, a front spoiler, side skirts, three-piece rear spoiler, rear lower bumper and fender garnishes.

In 2023 a new second generation GR86 / BRZ will go on sale. The Toyota GR86 will have a more powerful 2.4L flat 4-cylinder petrol engine, improved technology and new styling. The models will be GT and GTS as the first generation.
